The best tool to analyse Instagram Reel performance depends on whose reels you're looking at. For your own reels, start with Instagram's free Insights and add Metricool or Iconosquare when you need history, reports or several accounts. To benchmark competitors' numbers, Socialinsider and Sprout Social are the stronger picks. For reels that are winning in your niche, you need a different kind of tool, one that finds outliers on other accounts, such as Octupie, Sandcastles or Virlo.

We make Octupie, so weigh our entry with that in mind. Every price and plan below was checked on the vendor's own site in October 2026.

Why do reel analytics tools split into two groups?

Because "how did my reel do?" and "what's working in my niche?" need different data. Own-account analytics tools read the same Instagram Insights you already have and chart them over time. Niche research tools watch accounts you don't own and flag the reels that beat each account's usual views. Most creators end up needing one of each.

Your own numbers come from Instagram, through your account. Any tool you connect (Metricool, Later, Hootsuite) is reading the same Insights you already have, then storing it longer, charting it and putting it in reports. That's useful, but it can't tell you anything about reels you didn't make.

Niche data is about other people's reels. A niche tool watches accounts you don't own, works out what each one usually gets, and shows you the posts that clearly beat that. That's the only way to see a format working before you've tried it yourself.

If you skip the second job, you end up optimising inside your own small sample. If you skip the first, you never learn whether your version of a winning format actually landed with your audience.

Which tools are worth using in 2026?

For your own reels, start with Instagram Insights, which is free with a professional account. Add Metricool if you also schedule, Iconosquare if you report to clients, or Socialinsider if competitor benchmarks are the main job. For niche research, Octupie, Sandcastles and Virlo surface the reels that beat their usual views; Octupie covers Instagram only and turns what it finds into scripts in your style.

Job 1: which tools analyse your own reels?

Instagram Insights is the place to start, because it's free and holds the data every other tool reads. Metricool, Socialinsider, Iconosquare, Later, Hootsuite and Sprout Social add longer history, competitor benchmarks, reports, scheduling or team features on top of the same numbers, so pay for one only when you need one of those extras.

1. Instagram Insights (Professional Dashboard)

Best for: everyone, before paying for anything.

Switching to a professional account is what gives you access to Insights, and it costs nothing. You can open insights on a single reel or see the overview from the Professional Dashboard on your profile.

One change worth knowing: in August 2024 Instagram made views the primary metric across Reels, Stories, photos and carousels, so the same number now means the same thing on every format. In the same announcement, Adam Mosseri pointed creators to sends per reach (how often people who saw a post shared it by DM) as another number worth watching, and told them not to lean on any single stat.

In practice, I check four things on every reel: views, how long people watched, shares and saves. Comparing those across your last 10 to 20 reels tells you more than any single post's number.

Where it stops: it lives in the app, history is limited, there's no proper export for a client report, and it can't show you anyone else's reels in detail.

2. Metricool

Best for: solo creators who want analytics and scheduling in one place without paying much.

Metricool's free plan covers one brand, 20 scheduled posts a month, 30 days of analytics and up to 5 competitor profiles. Reels and Stories analytics are part of the plans. Paid plans start at $25 a month, or $20 a month billed yearly, for up to 5 brands, and raise competitor tracking to as many as 100 accounts.

Where it stops: competitor tracking shows you their numbers, but you still have to work out which posts actually beat that account's normal and why.

3. Socialinsider

Best for: brands, agencies and data-minded creators who want to know whether their reels beat similar accounts, not only their own past posts.

Socialinsider treats competitor analysis as the starting point rather than an add-on. You can add any public Instagram profile and compare it with yours on engagement rate, reach, impressions and posting habits, and Reels views are one of the metrics it compares across accounts. Socialinsider AI reads your account, your competitors and industry benchmarks together and writes a short analysis of what changed and what to do next; it can also group posts into themes automatically.

As of October 2026, plans start at $82 a month for Adapt (up to 20 profiles, 3 months of history), then $124 for Optimize and $199 for Predict, with competitor benchmarking on every plan. There's a 14-day trial with no card and no free plan. See Socialinsider's pricing.

Where it stops: it compares accounts and formats well, but it won't break down the hook or structure of a single competitor reel or write your version of it. At $82 a month it's also priced for teams more than solo creators.

4. Iconosquare

Best for: brands and agencies who need clean reports for clients.

Iconosquare has a free plan with standard analytics and one month of history. Paid plans are priced in euros and billed yearly, starting at €9 a month for Starter, with a 14-day trial. Monitoring of competitors, hashtags and industry trends sits on the Scale plan (from €69 a month for up to 5 profiles), capped at 5 competitors per profile. The site describes Reels analytics for Instagram and Facebook.

Where it stops: it's a reporting tool. Good for proving results to a client, less useful for deciding what to film next.

5. Later

Best for: creators who already schedule with Later and want analytics alongside it.

Later has no free plan; it offers a 14-day trial. Starter is $18.75 a month billed yearly and includes Instagram analytics for up to 3 months of history plus a best-time-to-post feature. Growth ($37.50 a month billed yearly) extends history to a year, and Scale ($82.50) to two years.

Where it stops: analytics here supports scheduling. There's no competitor or niche view on the plans described.

6. Hootsuite

Best for: teams and brands that need social listening and formal benchmarks.

Hootsuite starts at $99 per user a month on Standard, with a 14-day trial and no card needed. Standard includes analytics and reporting, social listening and benchmarking against 5 competitors. Professional, from $199, raises that to 20 competitors and adds scheduled reports and exports.

Where it stops: price. For one creator analysing their own reels, it's far more than you need.

7. Sprout Social

Best for: marketing teams that report across many profiles and channels.

Sprout Social's newest plan, Essentials, is $79 per seat a month billed yearly ($99 billed monthly) for up to 5 profiles, with profile and post-level reporting. Standard is $199 per seat a month billed yearly. Competitor, tag and paid insights start on Professional at $299 per seat a month billed yearly. Every plan has a 30-day free trial with no card, per Sprout's pricing page as of October 2026.

Where it stops: it's built for teams, and the competitor reports sit on a plan most solo creators will never need.

Job 2: which apps show the reels performing best in your niche?

This is the part your own Insights can't do. These tools judge a reel against the account that posted it. A reel with 80,000 views is ordinary for an account that usually gets 100,000 and a huge signal for one that usually gets 8,000.

8. Octupie

Best for: Instagram creators who want the standout reels in their niche found for them, explained and turned into a script.

During onboarding Octupie maps the top accounts in your niche, so you don't have to build a competitor list first. It watches those accounts and shows you the reels doing far better than they usually do. Open any one and you get the hook, what's on screen and the structure, plus the part you can copy. Pick a hook and it writes a ready-to-film script in your style.

What it doesn't do: Octupie doesn't show analytics for your own account, doesn't schedule or post, and doesn't export reports. It's Instagram only. Pair it with Instagram Insights to see whether your version worked.

Price: every new account gets a 7-day free trial with no card: 3 scripts, your niche's breakout reels updated daily and 5 new breakdowns. Creator is $29 a month or $279 a year, with 15 tracked competitors and 50 video breakdowns a month. Pro is $49 a month or $469 a year. INR pricing is available for Indian creators.

9. Sandcastles

Best for: creators working across Instagram, TikTok and YouTube Shorts.

Sandcastles lets you research top channels, find outlier videos, see why they worked and write scripts. Pro is $49 a month, or $39 a month billed yearly, for 100 credits; credits are shared between analyses, scripts and reports and don't roll over. Higher tiers are Visionary ($99, 250 credits) and Titan ($499, 1,500 credits plus API access). There's a trial, but no free plan, and its site says subscriptions aren't refunded. Our Sandcastles vs Octupie comparison goes deeper.

10. Virlo

Best for: agencies and marketers watching short-form across several platforms.

Virlo describes itself as a social listening and analytics platform for TikTok, YouTube Shorts and Instagram Reels. It has Content Research Agents for finding viral content, outliers and emerging creators, a Tracking Center for following specific creators and videos with alerts, and a Content Studio for writing from trend data. Starter is $49 a month with 2,000 credits; Pro is $199 a month and adds team seats, Slack and Discord alerts, and Zapier and n8n integrations. There's a free trial. See our Virlo alternatives piece if the price is the sticking point.

Can one tool do both jobs?

Not well, as of October 2026. The analytics suites (Metricool, Socialinsider, Iconosquare, Hootsuite, Sprout Social) come closest because they track competitor accounts next to your own. But they show competitor numbers in a table. They don't pick out which reel was an outlier for that account, and they don't explain the hook or structure behind it.

The niche tools go the other way. They're built around other people's reels and say little or nothing about your own account's history.

So the practical setup for most creators is two tools:

  1. Find what's working

Use a niche tool to find two or three reels that clearly beat their account's usual views this month, and note the hook and structure each one used.

  2. Make your version

Film your take on the strongest idea. Keep the structure, change the topic or angle to fit your audience.

  3. Check your own numbers

After a few days, open the reel's Insights. Compare views, watch time, shares and saves with your last 10 reels, not with the original creator's numbers.

If your reel beat your own usual, that format belongs in your rotation. If it didn't, the problem is usually the first few seconds, which we cover in why some creators get more views.

Which Reels metrics should you track?

Whatever tool you use, the numbers come from Instagram, so learn what each one means first. Instagram's guide to reel insights lists them per reel.

MetricWhat it tells you
ViewsHow many times the reel was viewed. Since August 2024 this is Instagram's main metric across formats.
Watch time and average watch timeWhether people stay. Average watch time is total watch time divided by initial views; compare it with the reel's length.
Shares (sends)Whether people found it worth passing on by DM. Mosseri has pointed to sends per reach as a number to watch.
SavesWhether people want to come back to it.
FollowsWhether the reel turned viewers into followers.

Judge each reel against your own recent reels at a similar age, say 7 days after posting, not against one viral outlier. That's the same logic outlier tools apply to other accounts.

What should you look for before paying?

Check four things before you pay: whether the tool judges each reel against that account's own normal, whether it covers only the platforms you post on, how much of your history it keeps, and whether a free option lets you test it first. These questions sort most of the tools above quickly:

  • Does it judge reels against the account's own normal? Raw view counts favour big accounts. A tool that compares each reel with what that account usually gets will surface ideas small creators can actually use.
  • Does it cover only the platforms you post on? Paying for TikTok and YouTube coverage you never open adds cost without adding answers.
  • How far back does your own history go? Free plans often keep 30 days. If you post weekly, that's four reels, too few to spot a pattern.
  • Is the free option enough to test it? Instagram Insights, Metricool and Iconosquare have free plans, and Octupie has a 7-day free trial with no card. Use those before committing to an annual plan.

If you're mainly comparing competitor trackers, our Instagram competitor tracking tools for India guide covers Keyhole, Socialinsider and Sked Social as well, and how to track competitor Instagram accounts walks through doing it by hand first. FAQ

Common questions.

01What is the best free tool to analyse Instagram Reel performance?

Instagram's own Insights, found in the Professional Dashboard. It's free with any professional (creator or business) account and covers every reel you post. If you want longer history, competitor profiles or reports outside the app, Metricool has a free plan that adds 30 days of analytics and up to 5 competitor profiles for one brand.

02Which apps show me which reels are performing best in my niche?

Your own Insights only cover your account. To see which reels are beating their usual numbers on other accounts in your niche, you need an outlier tool such as Octupie (Instagram only), Sandcastles (Instagram, TikTok and YouTube Shorts) or Virlo (TikTok, YouTube Shorts and Instagram Reels). Scheduling suites like Metricool, Iconosquare and Hootsuite track competitor accounts too, but they report numbers rather than picking out the standout reels.

03Are there AI tools that explain why a reel succeeded?

Yes, a few, and they work at different levels. Socialinsider AI reads your account, your competitors and industry benchmarks together and writes up what changed and what to do next. Octupie breaks down the hook, what's on screen and the structure of reels that beat their account's usual views, then writes your version as a script in your style. Sandcastles analyses outlier videos and helps you write scripts on a credit system.

04What are the best platforms for analyzing competitor reel performance?

For side-by-side numbers on accounts you choose, Socialinsider is built around competitor benchmarking, and Metricool tracks up to 5 competitor profiles free or up to 100 on paid plans. Sprout Social puts competitor insights on its Professional plan. These show engagement, reach and posting habits. To see which specific competitor reels beat that account's usual views, and why, use an outlier tool such as Octupie, Sandcastles or Virlo.

05Does Octupie show analytics for my own Instagram account?

No. Octupie doesn't give you a dashboard of your own reel stats, and it doesn't schedule posts or export reports. It maps your niche, surfaces the reels that beat their account's usual views, explains why they worked and writes your version in your style. For your own numbers, use Instagram Insights or a tool like Metricool.

06How much do Instagram Reel analytics tools cost in 2026?

As of October 2026, Instagram Insights is free. Metricool and Iconosquare have free plans, with paid plans from $25 a month and 9 euros a month. Later starts at $18.75 a month billed yearly, Socialinsider at $82, Sprout Social at $79 per seat billed yearly and Hootsuite at $99 per user. For niche research, Octupie is $29 a month after a 7-day free trial, and Sandcastles Pro and Virlo Starter are each $49 a month.
