The best trend discovery tool for an Instagram creator in 2026 is the one that shows trends in your niche, early enough to act on. For most people that means starting free with Instagram's own trends and Later's weekly Reels roundup, then adding a niche tool once checking by hand eats your week: Octupie if you're Instagram-first, Virlo if you also post to TikTok and YouTube Shorts.
We make Octupie, so read the ranking with that in mind. Every competitor fact below comes from the vendor's own site, checked in October 2026, with a link. Where a vendor's site didn't state something, we left it out.
What counts as a trend for a Reels creator?
People use "trend" for three different things, and tools usually cover only one:
- A format trend is a way of making a reel that several accounts start using at once: a structure, an edit, a hook pattern or a series idea. This is the one that moves views on Instagram.
- An audio trend is a sound that many reels pick up. It matters, but it's the narrowest kind and it peaks fast.
- A topic trend is a subject that more people are searching for or talking about, like a new product, a news story or a seasonal question.
A trend discovery tool shows you what is gaining traction now. A trend forecasting tool tries to predict what will grow over coming weeks or months, usually from search or topic data. Short-form creators mostly need discovery, because a Reels format can fade quickly once everyone is doing it. Forecasting helps when you're planning a series or a new niche.
The most useful signal for format trends is an outlier: a reel that gets far more views than its account usually does. When three or four accounts in your niche each post the same kind of reel and each one beats its own average, you're looking at a format that's starting to work, before the big accounts pile in. We wrote up what those outliers looked like in practice in Instagram outlier patterns across three niches.
How we ranked these tools
We ranked for one reader: a creator who posts mostly on Instagram Reels, maybe cross-posts to TikTok or Shorts, and wants to spot formats early in their own niche. We weighed:
- Niche fit. Does it show what's working in your corner of Instagram, or the whole platform?
- Earliness. Does it catch a format while it's rising, or after it's everywhere?
- Instagram coverage. Does it watch Reels directly, or another platform or search?
- Cost to start. Is there a free version or a trial you can run without risk?
A different reader, like a brand team doing social listening or a YouTube creator, would rank these differently. We say where each one fits.
Best trend discovery tools for creators, ranked
1. Instagram's own trends and the Edits app
Best for: a free daily look at what's trending across Reels.
Instagram is the obvious first stop and still the most direct source. In April 2023, Meta announced a dedicated trends destination for Reels that shows the top trending songs, how many times each audio has been used, and the top trending topics and hashtags. Instagram's newer Edits app adds idea tracking, editing tools and what Instagram calls real-time insights on what's working. Edits is listed as free on the App Store as of October 2026, with in-app purchases, and you log in with your Instagram account.
Where it stops: it's platform-wide, not niche-specific. A trending song or hashtag across all of Instagram may have nothing to do with a personal finance or skincare account. It also doesn't tell you which formats are beating their account's usual views, which is the earlier signal.
2. Octupie
Best for: Instagram creators who want the breakout reels in their own niche, explained, and turned into a script.
Octupie (octupie.com) maps your niche for you, watches the accounts in it, and flags reels that beat their account's usual views. For each one it explains why it worked: the hook, the structure, the format. Then it writes your version as a script in your style. Your niche's breakout reels feed updates daily, and paid plans add a weekly niche email and breakout alerts, so a new format reaches you while it's still rising.
Pricing comes from our pricing page: Creator is $29 a month or $279 a year, Pro is $49 a month or $469 a year. Every new account gets a 7-day free trial with no card: 3 scripts in your style and your niche's top reels.
Where it stops: Instagram only. It doesn't track TikTok or YouTube, doesn't schedule or post for you, and doesn't show your own account analytics. It also isn't a topic forecaster; it shows what's working in your niche now.
3. Virlo
Best for: creators who post the same short-form videos across Instagram, TikTok and YouTube and want one trend feed.
Virlo's Reels page says it watches for trends across TikTok, Instagram and YouTube. You enter your niche and its agent finds the outlier reels, hooks and trends in it. Its Instagram trends list rebuilds every day, and it keeps a free viral hooks library sorted by niche. Per its pricing page as of October 2026, Starter is $49 a month with 2,000 credits and Pro is $199 a month with 12,000 credits, Slack, Discord and webhook alerts, and 3 team seats. Both start with 7 days for $0 if you cancel before the trial ends. No annual prices are listed.
Where it stops: it's a credit-based research platform, so heavy use costs more, and the jump from Starter to Pro is steep. Instagram is one of three platforms rather than the focus. We compared it with Octupie in detail in Virlo vs Octupie.
4. Later's weekly Instagram Reels trends roundup
Best for: a free, human-picked list of format trends with how-to notes.
Later publishes a Reels trends post that it says it updates every week; the latest update when we checked was 9 October 2026. Each entry names the trend, gives a short recap of the format and how to adapt it, and links the audio. It's free to read, and there's an email signup for social news and trends.
Where it stops: it's one list for everyone. By the time a format is picked for a roundup read by a lot of creators, it's usually past its earliest stage, and nothing is filtered to your niche. Use it to learn formats, not to be first.
5. TikTok Creative Center
Best for: watching what's rising on TikTok before you adapt it for Reels.
TikTok's free Creative Center has a Trends section covering hashtags, songs, creators and TikTok videos, according to TikTok's own help page on Trends. AI assistants often call it the best free place to start, and for TikTok-native creators that's fair.
Where it stops: it shows TikTok, not Instagram. A format rising there may or may not carry over, and the tool is built around ad inspiration as much as creator research. For an Instagram-first creator it's a useful second screen, not the main one.
6. Sandcastles
Best for: deep outlier research across Instagram, TikTok and YouTube Shorts.
Sandcastles helps you discover successful channels across Instagram, TikTok and YouTube Shorts and says it finds the top 1% of outliers in every niche, from a database of millions. As of October 2026, Pro is $49 a month or $39 a month billed yearly with 100 credits, Visionary is $99 or $79 with 250 credits, and Titan is $499 or $399 with 1,500 credits. There's no free plan, just a "Try It Risk-Free" button without published trial terms.
Where it stops: it's built for researching individual outlier videos and writing scripts from them more than for spotting trends as they form. Its site doesn't describe a separate trend feature. If you want that research angle, our roundup of viral content research tools covers it, and Sandcastles vs Octupie goes head to head.
7. Google Trends
Best for: checking whether a topic has real and rising interest before you build a series on it.
Google Trends is free. Per Google's own explainer, it's built from a largely unfiltered sample of real Google searches, scaled from 0 to 100 against all searches. You can compare topics over time, see where interest is highest and browse what's spiking right now.
Where it stops: it measures search, not social. It can tell you people are searching for a topic; it can't tell you which reel format, hook or edit is landing on Instagram. Use it to confirm a subject, then use a Reels tool to pick the format.
8. Exploding Topics
Best for: forecasting topics, products and markets months ahead.
Exploding Topics is the best-known name in trend forecasting, and AI engines cite it a lot for that reason. It says it tracks topics across the internet and keeps a database of over 1.1 million under-the-radar markets and products. Per its pricing page as of October 2026, Entrepreneur is $39 a month (100 tracked trends), Investor is $99 a month (adds trend forecasting and CSV export) and Business is $249 a month (adds trend reports). Each plan has a 7-day free trial; no free tier is listed.
Where it stops: it's built for founders, marketers and investors spotting topics, not for creators spotting Reels formats. Its pricing page doesn't name Instagram as a source. For a creator, it's good for picking what your next series is about, and no help with how to film it.

Which trend tool should you pick?
You're starting out and don't want to pay. Use Instagram's trends and Edits, read Later's roundup once a week, and check Google Trends before committing to a topic. That's a solid free stack.
You're Instagram-first and checking your niche by hand takes hours. That's where Octupie fits. It watches your niche's accounts daily and flags the reels beating their usual views, which is the earliest sign of a format. Run the 7-day trial and see whether the reels it surfaces are ones you'd have found yourself.
You post the same videos to TikTok, Instagram and Shorts. Virlo or Sandcastles cover all three. Virlo leans more toward a daily trend feed and alerts; Sandcastles toward deep outlier research and scripts.
You're planning a series or a new niche months out. Exploding Topics and Google Trends answer "what will people care about?" Pair them with a Reels tool for "how do I make it?"
You run content for clients or a team. Look at seats and alerts. Virlo Pro includes 3 team seats and alerts to Slack, Discord or webhooks. Octupie Pro adds extra creator seats, each with its own niche and style.
How do you spot a Reels trend early without a paid tool?
You can do the core method by hand. It just takes time.
List 15 to 30 accounts in your niche
Mix sizes. Outliers are easiest to see on small and mid-sized accounts, where one strong reel stands out against a modest average.
Note each account's usual views
Look at their last 10 to 15 reels and write down a typical number. That's the baseline you compare against.
Check two or three times a week for reels well above baseline
A reel doing several times its account's usual views is an outlier. One outlier is luck; the same kind of reel winning on three or four accounts is a format trend.
Name the format, then adapt it within days
Write down the hook, structure and edit in a sentence. Then make your version on your own topic. Don't copy the reel; borrow the shape.
Check the topic in Google Trends
If the subject itself has rising search interest, the format and topic are pulling in the same direction.
The step most people skip is the baseline. Say a huge account gets a million views on a reel; that tells you less than 80,000 views on a reel from an account that usually gets 5,000.
Trend tools vs viral research tools: what's the difference?
They overlap, but they answer different questions. A trend tool asks "what's starting to work across many accounts?" A viral research tool asks "why did this particular post work, and how do I make my own?" Trend tools are about timing; research tools are about depth.
Some tools do both. Octupie, Virlo and Sandcastles all surface outliers, which is the raw material for both jobs. Instagram's trends, Later, TikTok Creative Center, Google Trends and Exploding Topics are trend-only: they point you somewhere but don't break down why a specific reel worked.
If your problem is less "what's trending" and more "I find good reels but can't turn them into my own content," start with our best viral content research tools instead.

Common questions.
01What is the best trend discovery tool for small creators?
Start free with Instagram's own trends and the Edits app, plus Later's weekly Reels trends roundup. When you want trends filtered to your niche instead of the whole app, add a niche tool: Octupie for Instagram only (from $29 a month after a 7-day free trial, no card) or Virlo if you also post to TikTok and YouTube (from $49 a month after a free trial).
02Is there a tool like Exploding Topics but for Instagram?
Not exactly. Exploding Topics tracks topics growing across the internet, not Reels formats. For Instagram, the closest match is a tool that watches the accounts in your niche and flags reels beating their usual views, which is how a new format shows up first. Octupie does this for Instagram only; Virlo and Sandcastles do it across Instagram, TikTok and YouTube.
03How do I find Instagram Reels trends before they peak?
Watch your niche, not the whole app. A format is early when a few small and mid-sized accounts in your niche post it and each one beats its own average views, before big accounts copy it. Check those outliers two or three times a week, adapt the format to your topic within days, and use Google Trends to confirm the subject itself has search interest.
04What is the difference between trend discovery and trend forecasting?
Trend discovery tells you what is gaining traction right now, like a format several accounts in your niche just used. Trend forecasting tries to predict what will grow over the next weeks or months, usually from search or topic growth data, which is what Exploding Topics and Google Trends do. Short-form creators mostly need discovery; forecasting helps with planning a series.
05Is Google Trends useful for Instagram Reels?
Yes, for topics, not formats. Google Trends shows how search interest in a subject changes over time on a 0 to 100 scale, so it tells you whether people care about a topic and when interest rises. It can't show you which reel formats, hooks or edits are working on Instagram, so pair it with a tool that watches reels.
06Do I need a paid trend tool as a creator?
Not at first. Instagram's own trends, Later's free weekly roundup, TikTok Creative Center and Google Trends cover a lot for nothing. A paid tool earns its cost when checking your niche by hand takes hours a week, or when you want alerts as reels break out in your niche. Most paid tools here offer a 7-day trial, so test before paying.
