What to know about Content Research
- Judge every reel against its own account's median views over the last 30 reels, because a 200k-view reel on a 20k-follower account is signal.
- Track 5 to 10 adjacent-niche creators with 10,000 to 200,000 followers, since smaller accounts are noisy and bigger ones ride brand equity you can't copy.
- One outlier is a data point, but three outliers from different accounts sharing the same hook, format or topic angle is a pattern worth testing.
- Topic windows usually close within a few weeks, and the first two or three creators to cover a topic tend to capture most of the outlier reach.

What Drives Instagram Outliers in Three Niches: Patterns We've Noticed
Patterns we've noticed on Instagram outlier reels across AI/tech, education, and lifestyle: hook archetypes by niche, save-to-like signal, topic windows.
Common questions.
01What is an outlier post on Instagram?
An outlier is a reel that beat its own account's usual views by a wide margin, not the most-viewed reel overall. A practical bar is three times the median of that account's last 30 reels. So 400k views on an 800k-follower account is underperforming, while the same 400k on a 12k-follower account means something in the hook, topic or format really worked.
02How long does manual competitor tracking take each week?
Usually 2 to 3 hours a week. That covers scrolling 5 to 10 accounts, estimating each post against the account's normal views, and noting the hook, format, topic angle, caption and comments in a doc. Most creators do it once and stop because the upkeep is high. Octupie automates the spotting and breakdown, showing each outlier as a multiple of that account's usual views.
03What should I borrow from a competitor's viral reel?
Borrow the structure and keep the surface yours. The hook archetype, topic angle, pacing, beat-by-beat structure and CTA shape are fair game. Your examples, point of view, vocabulary and personality should be your own. If their outlier was "3 mistakes beginners make with X", try "the one thing I wish someone told me when I started with X" instead.
